Lund prepares for “very big fight” against province
There’s been some new developments for musician Corb Lund and his Water Not Coal petition. This week during a press conference Alberta Premier Danielle Smith was asked if Lund’s petition question would appear on the October referendum ballot, but Smith suggested that due to timing, there’s a chance it might not appear on a ballot until October of 2027.
The country singer spent months garnering support and collected over 200,000 signatures to keep coal mining off the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains because he says the selenium run-off into our drinking water would be hazardous.
Lund, who delivered his signatures last week to Elections Alberta, says he and his team did everything the premier asked in order to have a question appear on a referendum ballot this October 19.

In response through a statement Lund said, “I think it’s disgusting to put out a challenge to Albertans, watch them break their backs and devote thousands of hours to achieve their goal, then pull the rug out from under us. It is despicable and dishonest, and I’m not going to stand by and let her get away with this without a very big fight.
“Danielle Smith gave us her word back in February…she broke that promise, and is doing everything she can to keep “Water Not Coal” from being on the referendum ballot in October.”
In a separate statement from Lund’s teams, BCN was told, “People are MAD. We are hearing from a surprising number of UCP voters who are saying they can’t believe this, and they’re never voting for the UCP again because of how Smith has handled this issue over the last week.”
Lund has put out a call for his supporters to get loud and post to social media asking Smith to keep her word, while tagging their MLA. He’s also building a team for a “Fight Back” campaign.
