City attempting to mitigate mosquito population

Large populations of mosquitos may soon be swarming in following the massive amounts of rain this spring and with warmer weather around our corner. The City of Lethbridge is monitoring areas of standing water in public areas and is also encouraging residents to check areas around their own property where mosquito larvae can develop.

Nelson Houle with the City of Lethbridge Parks & Cemeteries recommends private property owners to do what they can to take care of standing water and ensure proper drainage. Some ways to mitigate mosquito hatching is to keep grass cut low, clean out gutters and ensure rain barrels are covered.

In order to mitigate the population, the city typically has 7-10 days to add bio-larvicide to areas of standing water once larva were to appear.
