What Must Change for Autistic Children
Recently folks in southern Alberta have been paying close attention to a tragically developing story in the Crowsnest Pass. A young autistic boy vanished without a trace while out for a walk with other young members of his family during a camping trip on September 21.
Stories like this hit any parent hard but the parent of an autistic child might be hit a little harder, because they are aware of some of the specific challenges involved in a search such as this.
Brittany Blais is the mother of an autistic child, a community advocate, and Public Relations Coordinator for the Chinook Autism Society. She is also from the Crowsnest Pass and is familiar with its challenging Rocky Mountain terrain.
She joined BCN’s Jeannette Rocher for a discussion about the complexities of locating a missing neurodivergent child, and how she tipped off rescue workers about including visual and auditory cues in their search efforts.
She’s also written her MLA to invoke change to make the world more accommodating for those with autism.
