University commits to recruitment on World Teachers Day

As Monday marks World Teachers Day, the University of Lethbridge and its Faculty of Education says it’s finding ways to be responsive during the ongoing teacher’s shortage in schools everywhere.

The university is reporting challenges within a declining number of post-secondary students deciding to take on teaching, partly driven by sentiment of the work environments that led to events such as the Alberta teacher’s labour strike last October. But the Dean for the Faculty of Education, Dr. Lisa Starr, says provincial funding will at least help go towards the Early Years Education cohort for the next three years, but uncertainty will follow once that ends.

The University is also offering $70,000 in entrance awards over the next couple years for students who want to take up teaching in ordere to boost recruitment.
