Coutts protester Chris Carbert granted bail pending appeal

One of the men convicted from the Coutts 2022 border blockade has been granted bail pending his appeal.

Chris Carbert, has been serving a 6 1/2 year sentence for convictions of  mischief over $5,000 and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He, alongside Anthony Olienick were acquitted of the most serious charge of conspiracy to murder in 2024. Both were denied parole back in April after the board determined they “lacked accountability.”

On Monday, Calgary Justice Jo’Anne Strekaf said Carbert has “demonstrated that there is no substantial likelihood that he will commit a criminal offence or interfere with the administration of justice,”

Since his sentencing in September of 2024, Carbert had two years and seven months remaining in his sentence, and is eligible for statutory release in June 2026, with his sentence to expire in April 2027. Carbert can be released after appeal arguments that are scheduled to be heard in September.
