Alberta’s Jewish community mourns victims of Australia terrorist-attack

Australia is still in a state of shock after Sunday’s massacre at a Jewish festival at the famous Bondi Beach. The violence erupted after hundreds of Jews had gathered for the “Chanukah by the Sea” event celebrating the start of the eight-day Hanukkah festival with food, face painting and a petting zoo.
Shortly after the shooting, video began circulating on social media of a man approaching and disarming one of the gunmen. The hero’s name is Ahmed al Ahmed.
Meanwhile, here in Alberta, reactions from the Jewish community were swift following the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Australia.

Community leaders are sharing their concerns about safety during public events, the level of protection in place in Canada, and whether incidents like this could signal broader trends of antisemitism closer to home.

The CEO of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton says there are approximately 25,000 members of the Jewish community in Alberta.
