City of Lethbridge commemorate Red Dress Day

The City of Lethbridge is honoring Red Dress Day today. The day is meant to pay respects to the memories of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and Girls (MMIWG), and Two-Spirit-plus people. City Hall will be illuminated in red on Monday evening to promote awareness of the day.

In 2015 the National Inquiry was launched to investigate and report “systemic causes of all forms of violence against Indigenous women and girls, including sexual violence”. In 2019, the National Inquiry released its final report and 231 Calls for Justice. In response to those Calls for Justice, the city and community partners developed the MMIWG Recommendations and Work Plan, which includes 25 recommendations, and a series of projects aimed at addressing social, economic, cultural and institutional barriers facing Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ2+ peoples in our community.

In a statement released by the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, they ask Canadians to stand in solidarity today and beyond to support the 231 calls for justice from the National inquiry.
