Residential school system exercise takes place at school division Education Centre
Staff from the Lethbridge School Division’s Education Centre held a circle exercise today as part of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation week. The exercise represented an indigenous child being taken from their home and put into a residential school. Melanie Morrow, with the School Division says this type of activity is important in order to have a better understanding of what truly happened during that time.
“I think that it impacts people differently, I think that doing an activity likes this really as I said, it hits different, it puts you in a different mindset and having gone through an activity likes this really puts the shoe on the other foot. I think for a lot of people who don’t have the awareness of really what happened, going through an activity like this is really meaningful and really impactful,” said Melanie Morrow, Elementary Indigenous Education Teacher, Lethbridge School Division.
Similar exercises were held at other schools across the city.
