Lethbridge discourages feeding wild birds at city parks
The City of Lethbridge is putting out a call not to feed wild birds in the city, especially at Henderson Lake where it has resulted in reports of dead birds at the lake and around the park.
Feeding wild birds, even with bird seed can make them lose their natural instinct to feed themselves and can cause them to pick up diseases along the way. Ultimately, feeding birds despite good intentions can cause irreversible harm and can be detrimental to the birds’ health. The City says while investigating the reports of dead birds, they typically found large quantities of bird seed on the ground in the park.
The City is encouraging park users with food to “bring out what you bring in.” Birds who rely on human handouts are also known to become more aggressive between other birds and children.
