Alberta expands parking placard eligibility for vision loss

Alberta is expanding its disabled parking placard program to include people with vision loss, recognizing that accessibility barriers extend beyond mobility challenges.

Effective June 30, 2026, the province says the change will help eligible Albertans navigate parking lots more safely while improving access to work, medical appointments and community activities.

Alberta’s Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services, Nathan Neudorf, explains what prompted the government to expand the program to include Albertans with vision loss at this time.

There are three types of parking placards: A temporary placard, issued for between three and 12 months. A long-term placard, issued for five years and a permanent placard that can be renewed every five years by the client without additional medical certification.
