Number of International Permit Holders to Canada plummets

The Canadian government appears to be following through on its crackdown of approval of international student visas…particularly targeting students from India.

Through the third quarter of 2025, over 244 thousand study permits have been approved. That’s less than half that of 2023 after its third quarter, a year that finished with 680 thousand accepted permit holders, the highest total on record.

The University of Lethbridge responded to BCN on this topic and in a statement, said quote, “The decline in new international students is unfortunate as they contribute greatly to our ULethbridge community and beyond, enhancing culture and diversity while inspiring research and academic success.
