Lethbridge Council approves Body Cam, Economic Strategy funding
Lethbridge City Council has approved funding towards body-worn cameras for members of the Lethbridge Police Service. The funding will come from the Municipal Revenue Stabilization Reserve as a one-time allocation, to the tune of $555,000 this year.
In 2026, the city will contribute $914,000, but if approved for a provincial grant, that number reduces to $709,000. The province announced in 2023 that it would require all police officers to wear body cameras by 2026, to increase transparency and accountability.
The city also approved a one-time allocation towards their Economic Development Strategy. The city will pull $475,000 once again from the Municipal Revenue Stabilization Reserve to put more resources into completing and implementing its strategy and potential future development-based incentives.
Two official business motions were passed, one about Long-Term Financial Sustainability Framework and the other focused on Economic Development Research and Support.
Both approvals for the body cams and the Economic Development Strategy came from recommendations from the Economic and Finance Standing Policy Committee. Lethbridge City Council will not meet again until September for the summer.
