The University of Lethbridge is putting out the welcome mat to their soon to be new President and Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Digvir Jayas was announced as the new president back on January 19th, and Tuesday, he visited the campus for the very first time. Dr. Jayas, who has an agriculture research background, says he is looking forward to being a part of an institution that contributes a lot to the agriculture sector.
“When I saw the number of agriculture related companies in the town, and I certainly would like to explore the partnership with them, whether it is through engineering program, we want to develop an agriculture and food related area or sustainable agriculture area and engage those companies in building that program. And also, I would say, engaging them to know how we can work also with college, Lethbridge College together to develop a unique training program for the meet the industry needs if we don’t have a degree program,” said Dr. Digvir Jayas, Incoming President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Lethbridge.
A member of the board of governors for the university says Dr. Jayas brings a lot to the table, and they look forward to working alongside him.
“Dr. Jayas has a number of important attributes. I mean, first of all, the research that he’s done in the past directly ties to Southern Alberta. I mean, his area of research was in agriculture. He’s an agricultural engineer, so there’s a great fit there. But more importantly, he is a tremendous individual. The Order of Canada. I mean, that’s not something that comes easily. It’s a real testament to his character. He’s had tremendous administrative experience as the vice president, Research and Internationalization at the University of Manitoba. And he’s a good fellow. He listens to you. He wants to collaborate, and he wants you to be successful,” said Dean Gillamore, Chair of Board of Governors, University of Lethbridge.
The new president will officially begin his role on July 1st.
