New Indigenous-led recovery expands addiction treatment in Alberta

Southern Alberta now has its first Indigenous-led addiction recovery centre. The Blood Tribe now has access to a 75-bed recovery community that will provide no-cost, land-based treatment for those struggling with addiction.

Premier, Danielle Smith says the Alberta government is “investing $29 million to operationalize five Indigenous-led recovery communities this year. That is in addition to nearly $180 million in capital investment made so Indigenous communities can build five new facilities.

For his part, Rick Wilson, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction, says this is the first of five Indigenous-led recovery communities set to open in Alberta, expanding access to recovery-oriented and culturally appropriate addiction treatment.

The official says these beds will be able to support up to 1,500 people a year and provide access to long-term, recovery-oriented addiction treatment.
