Lyndsay Montina elected as new mayor of Coalhurst

Another female candidate was elected mayor in Alberta and this time in the Town of Coalhurst. Lyndsay Montina won the mayoral seat on Monday night. She beat out former city councillor Ron Lagemaat in a close race. Montina claimed 398 votes, whereas Lagemaat only earned 259. Montina says she was ecstatic when she heard the news on Monday night. She adds that one of the biggest challenges will be working with a new council.

“Obviously I’m new. Three of the four councillors are new. Some of the councillors are new, and I think for us it’ll be that large learning curve. It’s also bringing a group of people together and really building a team. I think that’s a big thing, and I’m really excited to start that process and get everyone on the same page so that we can start doing the work that we’ve set out to do.”

The town says out of approximately 2,000 eligible voters, close to 700 people cast their ballots.
