Even your lost pet can be used in a scam

Not even pets are safe from scammers these days. A pet extortion scam is raising concern, and the Better Business Bureau or BBB is warning pet owners to stay alert.

Scammers target people who post about lost pets on social media, claiming to have found the animal and demanding a fee for its return.

To make it more convincing, some even use AI-generated photos that resemble the lost pet. Wes Lafortune, Media Relations at BBB, breaks down how this scam works to exploit pet owners.

Scams in Canada result in $400 to $500 million in losses every year. Lafortune says to report the scam to the police using the non-emergency line.
