Here’s how to avoid furnace maintenance scams

The Better Business Bureau is getting word out about furnace scams that could be on the rise as the weather starts to chill.

The phishing scam sees scammers tend to reach out by phone, email, or even online ads. They get victims to click on a link where they solicit your personal information, including banking.

Other tactics involve scammers going to people’s front doors appearing to offer furnace services. The BBB says most HVAC technicians would likely never come to your door uninvited.

The BBB suggests these tips to avoid furnace scams:

  • Research the company’s background and licensing
  • Review warranty coverage
  • Check out company reviews at BBB.org
  • Find out about WCB coverage, and liability insurance
  • Compare prices and service packages
  • Get a quote in writing
