Alberta Canola relieved after China lifts most tariffs on canola
Days after Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing, many at home are still reacting to the major deal made with China late last week. Canada will significantly decrease tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles and introduce them to the country.
In exchange, China is dropping all or most tariffs on peas, lobsters, crabs, and most significantly, canola. Specifically, China has removed tariffs entirely on canola meal and greatly reduced canola seed down to 15 percent.
Many canola producers and farmers plus Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has praised the deal over relief in the canola industry. The Chair for Alberta Canola tells BCN that he was watching in the middle of the night on Friday in anticipation of the deal, and believes the government took the concerns of farmers seriously.
