Young women explore career paths in skilled trades
It is time to toss out the mindset that skilled trades and technologies are just for men and start sending a new message to Alberta’s future workforce. That is according to Alberta-wide organization, CAREERS: The Next Generation. This week in Lethbridge, they held their Young Women in Trades and Technologies Spring Break Camp. They partnered with six local businesses and organizations to provide an opportunity for female youth to explore a wide variety of career paths in a safe and encouraging environment.
Over the course of the three-day camp, females in Grades 10 – 12 had a chance to learn from industry experts and to try their hand at a number of trades including welding, carpentry, plumbing, autobody, cookery, and water & wastewater operations.
According to a 2022 Build Force survey, women accounted for only seven per cent of the skilled trades workforce in Alberta.
