Work to begin on cardiac catheterization lab at Chinook Regional Hospital

The province announced Wednesday that design work will begin shortly on the new Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Chinook Regional Hospital. Alberta Infrastructure has allocated more than $320 million for the expansion.

The expansion will more than double the capacity of the intensive care unit and cardiac care unit. The number of ICU beds will go from 16 to 26, while the CCU will go from 4 to 28 beds. In addition to that, the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation’s “Bringing Hearts Home” campaign has raised more than $32 million towards the expansion.

Nathan Neudorf, MLA for Lethbridge-East expressed, “For families across Lethbridge and southern Alberta, the access to specialized cardiac care made possible by this investment will be life-changing.”

Design work is starting September 2026 and anticipated to finish September 2027. Construction is anticipated to begin in October 2027, with completion targeted for the end of 2031. About 1,800 jobs will be supported during the process.
