Unique history on display at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park is a beautiful natural landscape that you can visit just over an hour away from Lethbridge. It features incredible rock carvings that date back thousands of years. BCN’s Micah Quinn heard from experts on the history of this amazing world heritage site.
The historic park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 2019 and holds a special place in the hearts of many Blackfoot people in southern Alberta.
Two of the main attractions at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park are the petroglyphs and the pictographs.
Staff with the site told us there is a huge range in the age of the markings.
The park has also faced issues in the past relating to the defacing of rock art or landforms by members of the public. Staff are asking visitors to show respect when they visit the area.
