Proposed name change for Parkside Drive
If you take a cruise down Parkside Drive by Henderson Lake you may see a new name in the future. The Civic Works Standing Policy Committee recommended that Lethbridge City Council name the current area Exhibition Way. It would be to honour the Lethbridge and District Exhibition. The area is located adjacent to the new Agri-Food Hub and Trade Centre that is set to open in 2023. It is expected to generate more than $90 million for the local economy each year. Mike Warkentin, the CEO of the Lethbridge and District Exhibition, says the renaming would be vital to maintaining the legacy of the site.
“It goes back over 100 years to when this site was developed for the World Dry-Farming Congress in 1912. The Exhibition not only has played an important role here on Parkside Drive, but also in the community and in the region as a whole. Cementing that legacy through a landmark like naming the street after us we couldn’t be more honoured to be part of that. Quite frankly we hope it goes forward.”
The cost for the sign change would be around $2,000 to taxpayers.
