Percentage of victims reporting scams is low says LPS

March is fraud prevention month. According to the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre last year Canadians lost $567-million to scammers. That is an increase of $37-million from 2022. Sargeant Kevin Talbot who is with the Economic Crimes Unit of the Lethbridge Police says the percentages of those reporting that they have been a victim of fraud actually remains quite low of between five and 10 per cent. Officials say the three most reported types of fraud include identity theft, service fraud and phishing. Phishing meaning ways that fraudsters get victims to give away sensitive information including their social insurance numbers, passwords or banking details especially on online platforms such as Facebook.
