New hockey training program to come to Lethbridge

There is an initiative designed for men who are interested in leading healthier lives. The Hockey Fans In Training program will give men a chance to join a healthy lifestyle program. The program has partnered with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Dr. Brendan Riggin is the Head Coach for the Hockey Fans In Training program, and he says that residents of Lethbridge will have a chance to make their way to the Enmax Centre and experience some behind the scenes action with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Like-minded men can join together for the Hockey FIT Program to discuss how they can improve their health together.

A 2014 pilot study was done to prove that the program was effective in improving men’s health, and this is the first year that the program has been run in Lethbridge.

The program will allow participants to meet players from the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and the initiative is hoping to host some of the sessions within the facility of the Enmax Centre this year.

“It makes for this unique atmosphere where it’s very team mentality oriented, and quite enjoyable for most of the guys,” says Riggin.

Riggin says that the program noticed that even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, a lot of men weren’t living the healthiest lifestyles. “Unfortunately, that has led to a high rate of chronic disease here in Canada, particularly for men between the ages of 35-65.”

Assessments will take place in the communities, where the program’s researchers will take some health indicators from the participants, like height and weight.

After that is finished, some communities will start the program in the first week of May in a randomized selection.

The Hockey FIT Training program has partnered with the University of Lethbridge, and they are planning to have students lead the certification program.

“They’ll be the ones who deliver those 12-week sessions for fans in the Lethbridge area,” says Riggin.
