Lethbridge Polytechnic sees 80% decline in International Study Applicants

The number of International Study Permits to Canada has seen a dramatic decrease.

Ottawa’s original border legislation, Bill C-2, included provisions aimed at curtailing student visas. But now that C-2 has been split into two pieces of legislation, mass cancellations for groups of visa holders have been folded in to what is now Bill C-12. Publicly, Federal Immigration Minister, Lena Metlege Diab has said the method of mass cancelations could be used in hypothetical scenarios like wars and pandemics if it is in the public’s interest. But there are reports that Ottawa is seeking greater country-specific powers.

Lethbridge Polytechnic says the effects from the government’s efforts in limiting international study visas has seen a decline in international applications by over 80 percent, and overall international enrollment down over 40 percent at the institution.
