Federal government commit $7-million towards Lethbridge seniors housing

Members with the federal government were in Lethbridge on Monday to announce they are contributing more than $7 million to build and improve seniors housing all within our city.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, Mike Kelloway, announced that $2.23 million will go towards the conversion of 50 units of affordable rental units for seniors at The Edwards, a former Seasons Retirement Community. All units are listed as below market rents for seniors over 55, while 37 units meet the criteria for affordable housing, according Ken Harvie, the President CONCEPT. Investment Partners Ltd.

“The Edwards directly addresses the urgent need for accessible and affordable housing options for seniors in the community. Through collaborative efforts and shared vision, we are confident that together, we will make a difference in the lives of our seniors and contribute to the prosperity of our community for generations to come.”

The Edwards has since completed it’s residential transitions and has room at ground level to be made into commercial space. It’s located directly across 10th avenue from the Chinook Regional Hospital.

Additionally, $4.8 million will go towards repairs and renewals of 480 units within the Green Acres Foundation. Some repair work listed includes modernizing the elevators, improving the building envelope, installing energy efficient lighting, replacing the roof with higher density shingles for longer wear and energy savings, as well as installing high energy efficient HVAC systems and high efficiency boilers.

Mike Kelloway says in a statement, “Supporting housing in Lethbridge means investing in the communities people already call home. By helping seniors age in place and remain connected to their neighbourhoods, while also preserving and improving existing housing through repairs and maintenance, we can strengthen community stability, improve quality of life, and ensure our housing stock continues to meet the needs of residents for years to come.”

The $7.03 million towards Monday’s housing announcement is funded by the government’s Affordable Housing Fund. The Government of Canada say that as of March 2026, $15.83 billion has been committed to support the creation of over 61,700 units and the repair of over 174,700 units through the Affordable Housing Fund.

Kelloway also met with Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce members on Monday afternoon to discuss trade and transportation in the region. Kelloway has made the trip to Lethbridge on behalf of the Federal Minister for Housing and Infrastructure, Gregor Robertson.
