CTF: Alberta and Saskatchewan should drop provincial gas taxes
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Carney’s decision on the removal of the federal gas tax and are now calling for provincial governments to follow suit. Specifically, the CTF is calling on the premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan to shelve their provincial gas taxes permanently.
In Alberta’s case, finance minister Nate Horner said last week that the province will stick to its gas tax relief formula and will not decide until July to drop part or the whole tax depending on the fluctuating price of oil. But the CTF claims keeping that mechanism in place currently does not make any sense given the current situation.
Albertans are charged an extra 13¢ per litre while Saskatchewan issues a 15¢ per litre tax. The CTF says dropping those taxes will help save $13 to $15 on filling up a pick-up truck, while commercial truckers can save $125 on filling up diesel.
