City of Lethbridge introduces new mattress disposal system

It’s springtime and that usually means spring cleaning. But if you have any old mattresses you’re throwing away…don’t take them to the landfill. The City of Lethbridge is notifying residents that beginning April 1st, they can instead drop off old mattresses and box springs to any of the city’s yard waste and recycling sites.

The city says this will save commute times and divert mattresses away from the landfill. There are three sites in the north, south and west sides of the city where mattresses will be accepted as part of this pilot project. The city says it takes in approximately 3,700 mattresses and box springs each year.

The city, however, will not accept contaminated mattresses including those with bed bugs. If a mattress contains bed bugs, you’re asked to keep it wrapped and bagged, then take it to the landfill.

The City’s yard waste sites will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., April 1 to November 15:
