Canadian Armed Forces conduct military drone exercises at CFB Suffield

It was a busy summer for the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in southeast Alberta.

Canada’s largest army base at CFB Suffield was fully active with Canadian and British forces involved in exercises to test new military technologies. After the British Army Training Unit Suffield, or BATUS, withdrew in 2023, their units have returned to train with approximately 1,000 Canadian soldiers to test new drone technologies in Exercise RHINO BIZZ.

The Base Commander at CFB Suffield, Lieutenant Colonel Turmel Chaisson, says these drones or what they call uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), are indeed the future of warfare.

LCol Chaisson also says BATUS has expressed a desire to increase training and testing at the base. The Canadian Armed Forces reportedly has interest in increased use at CFB Suffield, including holding year-round primary reserve training there.
