Bill 22 aims to strengthen animal welfare laws in Alberta
The Alberta Government is updating the Animal Protection Act for the first time in 20 years. Bill 22 is designed to improve animal welfare in the province. If passed, it will strengthen penalties for offenders under the act, increase maximum fines from $20,000 to $250,000 and introduce potential jail terms, up to 12 months, for serious offences. Leanne Niblock, Executive Director with the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), explains more about this amended act.
