Association calls on province to opt out of $10 a day childcare

A group representing childcare providers is urging the Alberta government to opt out of the $10 a day national childcare program. The Association of Childcare Entrepreneurs says it applauds Premier’s Smith recent decision to opt out of the national dental care plan and wants similar action taken on childcare. Association Chair Krystal Churcher says the national childcare program has been beneficial to parents from an affordability standpoint. However, she says it is also limiting choice for parents, creating financial hardships for the province’s private childcare providers and leading to long waiting lists for childcare spaces. The Association of Childcare Entrepreneurs is the same group that organized a series of province-wide closures of childcare centres in January to protest implementation the funding agreement for providers participating in the $10 a day program.
