City opens brand new play space in Galt Gardens

The City of Lethbridge has officially opened a brand-new play space in Galt Gardens. The area which is located by the Rotary Centennial Fountain features inclusive play equipment, rubber surfacing, park furniture and a plaza space. City Councillor Jenn Schmidt-Rempel says this park is just one more step in helping to revitalize the downtown area.

“It’s our downtown core. It’s a point of pride in our community, and we want to make sure that we are taking pride in our community and we want to encourage people to comedown, explore what we’ve got going on downtown. Festival Square was a key piece of that. The Third Avenue Revitalization project was a key part of that. Revitalizing Gulp gardens, encouraging businesses to relocate downtown. It really just energizes the community. It gives the community a hub to look forward to and a hub to look towards.”

The park came to fruition through the city’s Heart of our City Master Plan. It was identified as a key feature that was lacking in the area for recreation.

“With that, we saw an opportunity when the federal government was offering a grant to be able to create a space within the park that would activate and bring in that piece of recreational equipment. So we started the design work for this project back in 2021, 2022. And so to be able to see it built and hear with kids on it today is a great accomplishment.”

The city did secure $375,000 through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund to help build this project.
