Two elementary schools in Medicine Hat to close

Two elementary schools in Medicine Hat will be closing at the end of the school year after the Medicine Hat Public School Board made the decision this week, based on declining student enrolment.

Approximately 300 students will have to be relocated from Webster Niblock School and Southview Community School. The Chair of the School Board, Catherine Wilson, says the decision was made following public and staff feedback on student supports, wellbeing and community needs, but acknowledges that parents have expressed anger over the decision to close the schools.

Wilson goes on to describe that schools in Medicine Hat are not facing the same issues of overcrowded classrooms like larger cities in Alberta are. Transitional planning will begin immediately, with regular updates to be provided to parents.
