Trushar Patel recognized with Alberta Newcomer Award

A total of 31 Albertans are being honoured for their contributions to our province. The Canadians who were born outside of the country and immigrated to Alberta were honoured with the Alberta Newcomer Recognition Awards.

That includes Trushar Patel, who is an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Lethbridge. He took home the Career & Academics Contribution Award and won for his work in developing targeted therapies for a range of viral infections including Hepatitis B and COVID-19.

“This award recognizes in eight different categories how the work of community that was born and raised outside Canada had made impact in Alberta. In my particular case, the award recognizes my work here at the University of Lethbridge on various viral nucleic acids, recognition of human proteins, how they infect humans and how can we develop targeted therapeutics by understanding the communications between viruses and human proteins.”

The two other Lethbridge winners were; Guillermo Aceytuno the owner of OnSite Auto here in the city who was given the Entrepreneurial Spirit Award and Josephine Naicker a course instructor at the University of Lethbridge who was recognized for the Career & Academics Contribution Award.
