Skate Canada decision has many siding with Alberta

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is responding after Skate Canada announced this week it will stop hosting events in Alberta because of its new law that restricts transgender athletes from participating in female-only sport. For her part, Danielle Smith, “Women and girls have the right to play competitive sports in a safe and fair environment against other biological females. She goes on to say, Skate Canada‘s refusal to hold events in Alberta is disgraceful. And that the province expects an apologize and an adjustment in Skate Canada’s policies quote – “once they realize they are not only compromising the fairness and safety of their athletes, but are also offside with the international community, including the International Olympic Committee.”

Meantime, some parents are also voicing their opinions. According to a 2024 Leger poll, 68 per cent of Canadians say transgender athletes who were assigned male at birth should not be allowed to compete in female sports, while only 17 per cent support their participation.
