The Alberta government is allocating billions towards the provincial healthcare system, with some benefits being distributed locally.

Premier Danielle Smith, alongside several ministers announced Monday that $59 million over three years will go towards the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Lethbridge’s Chinook Regional Hospital and expanded ICU capacity at Chinook and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. The catheterization lab would serve approximately 1,500 to 1,700 patients annually once it becomes operational. The Chinook Regional Hospital is expected to see its intensive care capacity grow to 54 beds pending construction, while Medicine Hat Regional expands to 18.

The move comes during the push to provide critical cardiac care to the south zone, as the hospital’s foundation has raised nearly 25 million out of $30 million in their ‘Bringing Hearts Home’ campaign.
