Poison Prevention Week 2026 focuses on safe medication-use

Maybe you have heard of someone who has been accidentally poisoned. Across the country this week has been proclaimed National Poison Prevention Week, and physicians are reminding everyone there are simple but important steps you can take to stay safe. This includes speaking with a doctor or pharmacist about medications and natural health products, reading labels carefully, and using products as directed.

The campaign, which runs annually during the third week of March, aims to help prevent avoidable harm. Each year, more than 5,000 people in Canada lose their lives due to poisoning. Today, BCN speaks with Dr. Jason Cabaj, Provincial Population Health Medical Officer with Public Health.

Canada has a toll-free 24-seven number for poison centres. If you suspect a poisoning, call at call 1-800-332-1414
