Medicine Hat City Council unanimously approved last Monday a capital budget amendment of over $131 million towards the development of the Saamis Solar Park.
The proposed site within 1,270 acres on the city’s north side was initially proposed as a 325 megawatt project. The city purchased the project from DP Energy last year with the intention of scaling when needed, currently starting with 75 megawatts.
In the midst of various concerns and pushback from city residents, Medicine Hat Mayor, Linnsie Clark, is assuring that the project wouldn’t raise electricity rates or taxes.
If all hurdles are crossed in time, the solar field is expected to be constructed and operational by 2028.
