This past weekend, Ukraine celebrated the nation’s Independence Day, including those who escaped to Canada since the start of Russia’s invasion. Events were held in Taber and in Lethbridge to commemorate Ukrainian heritage.

One of the first Ukrainian evacuees who made her way to Lethbridge, Madina Kononenko, says there is still a spirit of hope for the future and is grateful to Canada where Ukrainians have been able to find work and continue to support each other.

Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Kyiv over the weekend to mark Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day. Carney further emphasized Canada’s support and commitment to Ukraine’s security, including the &2 billion package he announced at the G7 summit in June.
