Lethbridge Polytecnic offers new power line technician program

Power line technicians build and maintain the infrastructure that delivers electricity to homes and businesses, and Lethbridge Polytechnic is one of only two institutions in Alberta to offer the new Power Line Technician Apprenticeship program, explained Kevin Wiber, Associate Dean, Centre for Trades and Technologies with Lethbridge Polytecnic. He added that the polytechnic trains professionals in the field and provides the skills and hands-on experience needed to work in Alberta’s expansive electrical utility sector. Wiber also said that power line technicians can find job opportunities with local, provincial, and national service providers. The dean explain that the work includes maintaining existing power lines and maintaining overhead, underground, and transmission distribution systems.

This four-year apprenticeship consists of three years of classroom learning and a fourth year requiring additional workplace hours to reach program completion.
