Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is one of three Canadian UNESCO World Heritage sites that, this week, are commemorating the nation’s 50th anniversary of signing the world heritage convention.
Over the past five decades, Canada has designated 22 sites, including Head-Smashed-In, that recognize cultural and natural sites with intrinsic value to humanity. Wednesday’s celebration according to the National Trust of Canada, underscored Indigenous importance to Canada’s participation in world heritage.
Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump has welcomed over 3 million people since 1987 and the opening of its interpretive centre. They will celebrate 40 years as a UNESCO World Heritage site next year.
