Coaldale resident angry about plans for new recreation centre and high school site

The town of Coaldale began the process of a joint multi-use recreation facility and high school back in October of 2018. Many residents, however, have been frustrated saying they were not properly consulted on the project.

The initiative would extend westbound on 16 Avenue, just past the Coaldale Birds of Prey. The area is currently popular for walking and other outdoor activities.  Clive Schaupmeyer is one local who is quite upset about the proposed site.

“We’re very concerned…traffic, sewers, the wetlands being disturbed, a lot of traffic going by the Birds of Prey, a total lack of public participation in the selection of this site in the first place,” says Schaupmeyer. “The majority of residents in this town, for absolute fact, think this location for a school and rec centre is ridiculous.”

The town of Coaldale is currently in Phase 2 of the process, which includes preliminary design plans for the recreation centre.
