At around 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, a train derailed just outside of Champion, Alberta, tipping over 30 railcars onto their sides and off the track. Canadian Pacific Kansas City confirmed to BCN that it was their train that derailed along Highway 23.
The railway says there were no injuries, and no dangerous goods were involved in the derailment. The preliminary assessment is that approximately 34 cars were involved, including 31 hopper cars carrying grain products. Three tanker cars carrying vegetable oil were also involved.
One of our viewers ended up capturing video shortly after the incident while they were driving southbound on Highway 23, before sending it to BCN.
CPKC crews and equipment are now on-site working on the clean-up. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
