Candlelight vigil marks one-year of Darius MacDougall’s disappearance

Monday, September 21^st marked the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of six-year-old Darius MacDougall.

A candlelight vigil was held on Tuesday night in front of Lethbridge City Hall as his family and supporters continue to look back and advocate for further change in the way the nation issues Amber Alerts. A petition aimed at reforming Amber Alerts to give police in Alberta and Canada more power to issue them has garnered more than 20,000 signatures.

The petition organizer, Ronnie DeGagne, says the proposed “Darius’ Law” is under review by the provincial government.

Darius disappeared last year at a campground in the Crowsnest Pass, where RCMP initiated an extensive search effort but called the search off more than a week later. The RCMP said in a statement that investigative work remains ongoing, and they’ve responded to more than 70 public tips to date.

“The Alberta RCMP recognizes that Darius’ disappearance continues to weigh heavily on his family and those who know and love him. The passage of time does not lessen the importance of finding answers, and investigators remain committed to pursuing information that may help bring clarity to what happened to Darius.”
