Alpha House Society over capacity during cold weather

Here in Lethbridge our only shelter has been full and over capacity during the last few nights due to the extreme cold weather. Staff from Alpha House Society say they do not turn away any homeless that are in need. There are also currently talks to have the Blood Tribe Department of Health take over the operations of the shelter.

“That is still the plan for the service provision grant to be transferred to the Blood Tribe Department of Health. That would be transitioning in January. So still a little bit of time until then. And discussions are ongoing about the best way to make that transition as seamless as possible for folks on the street,” says Shaundra Bruvall, the communications manager for Alpha House.

Staff from Alpha House say you can donate winter jackets, boots and sweatpants at the shelter for our city’s most vulnerable to use during the cold winter months. Staff say personal hygiene items are also currently needed.
