Alberta aiming to make annual screening tests mandatory

The Alberta government is aiming to make annual screening tests for students in early education mandatory, in the Education Act. The new legislation, Bill-6, would require all schools to administer screening tests from kids in kindergarten to grade three.

The idea is to help teachers identify students with deficits at an early age, with Minister of Education, Demetrios Nicolaides, saying the tests would “address complexity head on and ensure that children with diverse and complex needs get the help they need to thrive.”

But critics have arisen from the recent news, including U of L professor Richelle Marynowski, who says it simply takes time away between the teachers and students.
