Lethbridge Poppy Campaign to begin this weekend
The Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign gets underway later this week. Every year from the last Friday in October to November 11th, residents are encouraged to wear a poppy to honour our veterans.
“As a legion, we are keepers of remembrance. That is one of our main things we want to act on, as well as looking after veterans and their families. So as a keepers of remembrance, every year we share poppies with the communities. Poppies are always free. And some of the observations that we have observed over the years on Tag Day, a lot of people think they got to pay for a poppy. We always encourage people just take a poppy and wear it. As a veteran, honor us by wearing that poppy,” said Glenn Miller, Co-chair, General Stewart Branch No.4.
“I think people tend to forget that veterans are not 1st 2nd World War Korea. They are also yesterday, today and tomorrow. We are creating veterans every day in this country. We got people fighting, training in Ukraine, we got people that have trained in Latvia, and we got people all over the world in peacekeeping missions. Still, I think it’s important that people continue to remember these sacrifices,” said Jeff Alden, Poppy Chair, General Stewart Branch No4.
The campaign kicks off on Saturday. Locations of where poppies can be picked up can be found on the Legion’s website.
