Researchers at Lethbridge Polytechnic are one year into a two-year research project that aims to turn canola into a fish feed by-product in the aquaponics industry.
The aquaponics system uses a symbiotic, closed-loop ecosystem where fish waste provides nutrients for plants, which in turn filters water for the fish. The new study would prevent the use of having to rely on dead and milled fish for food and protein.
If successful, which according to Polytechnic researchers believes to be trending so, it would theoretically open a new market for Canada’s canola industry.
