Lethbridge judo athlete clinches gold at Commonwealth Games

A Judo athlete from Lethbridge is celebrating a gold medal win at last week’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Evelyn Beaton from the Lethbridge Judo Club was able to beat Sofia Asvesta of Cyprus in the final match of the women’s 52-kilogram division last Friday.

Originally from Ontario, Beaton’s father, Ewan, was also a former judo athlete and Team Canada coach. Evelyn says she’s proud to represent the nation as she continues competing internationally next week in Peru.

Beaton’s gold medal in her first Commonwealth Games appearance was one of 19 gold medals and 62 total medals won by Canada at the Commonwealth Games.
