The City of Lethbridge has experienced heavy rainfall over the past few days, with Environment Canada saying the region would get a total accumulation of 50-100mm of rain. It has caused water levels in the Oldman River to rise and wash mud and debris into the river and making the water quality murkier than usual. It’s causing some challenges to the Water Treatment Plant.
Therefore, the City is asking all residents and business to cut back on any non‑essential water use indefinitely. Water Production at the treatment plant has been reduced to ensure safe standards and protect equipment, and the city is using water from local reservoirs to fill in some demand. The City is reassuring that the tap water is safe to drink.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant continues to experience elevated flows and they’re team is also monitoring to ensure safe operational performance.
The community is asked to:
- avoid outdoor water use such as vehicle washing
- restrict indoor use by keeping showers short and delaying laundry or dishwashing
- use water only for essential purposes like drinking and cooking
- avoid stockpiling water
The City is also suspending non-essential water activities and reducing internal consumption whenever possible. Conservation measures are in place until further notice, with the situation being watched by teams at each plant site.
